So, I’m getting ready for the “MOSH PIT” on 89.9fm WORT in Madison, WI on Monday nights from 11p-2a. I’ve been doing this show for just about 10 years now. It has its ups and downs. I’d have to say I’ve never missed more than 2 shows each year. Depending on how vacations fall n stuff.
So yeah, one thing I’ve been too lazy about over the years is promotion. I used to have some business cards, but haven’t re-made them yet. I was gung-ho about the website for a while (www.moshpitradio.com) Now I just post the playlists. I’ve never had t-shirts made up. With the amount of concerts I go to, that would be some great self promotion! Mike’s brother made some great logos, but I haven’t done much with those, but damn, after getting some new t-shirts for softball, they were only $15 each, I could get a few friends to buy some t-shirts, and whatnot… If they take off, maybe like, listeners might want to buy them or donate money to WORT as a pledge or something? Yeah, that’s the ticket.
Mike and I have been kicking around the idea of a WORT Metal concert show. Well that idea has kind of come to fruition. May 22nd, there’s a few bands playing at the Annex. 12th Gate from Chicago and a couple of local prog/power metal bands MINE and Mirror Black, and it’s a “WORT Mosh Pit Welcomes…” show! Neato huh?
I think though that the 10 year anniversary would be a good time for some sort of grass roots media blitz!
Anyways… on a related note, Friday night was a great concert in Milwaukee. Iced Earth with Children of Bodom (Finland) and Evergrey (Sweden) Some really talented bands played to a pretty full house, some great local bands played on two side stages. There was a LOT going on! Saturday night, a sold out show hit the Eagles Ballroom. Slipknot with Fear Factory, Chimaira and God Forbid. Both shows, I was lucky enough to make it onto the guest list without any snags… that’s a rarity lately! All of the bands put on a great performance, and it was great to see them all live. Sunday I laid around and relaxed. Standing all that time in smoky crowded rooms takes a lot out of a guy!

Not really. Time flies when you hate work, have softball practice, a radio show and some concert type things.
Tonight was the first softball game of the season. Tuesday’s men’s league game was rained out. Well, you always go in with high hopes, even with some practices, and the result sucked. we lost 21-9. It wasn’t too far out of whack til the other team’s last at bat. Personally, I had a decent night hitting. My first swing was a home run! Great way to start off the year. I then followed that up with a single and a double. Sad to only get to bat 3 times I tell ya. But 5 RBIs is cool! I made a base-running flub. I was on first and it was an infield ball, I was forced out at 2nd, and didn’t make a real great effort to get out of his way and he sort of ran into me. Interference was called on me, and the girl that hit the ball was called out. DOH. (Yes, it was my fault, but I think they would have gotten her out anyways) Live n Learn!
Tuesday… due to “Administrative Professionals” day, some select people got to go to a fancy lunch on the company. Problem? All the people that would normally watch the front desk/phones were the ones that got to go. So, who do the powers-that-be think would be good to do this while they were gone? Yup. Me. That’s all I’m going to say about that. >:-|
—-irritation while typing this, i’ve now put in 2 diff. cds to listen to and they are BOTH copy protected, therefore rendering them useless. I listen to most of my cds while on the computer. What’s funny about it, is I already downloaded the music from one of these cds a few weeks ago! Yup, that’s really workin’ there einsteins! You institute some “technology” to stop ripping of cds, therefore taking away ways to listen to it. one of them says “will not play in computers, some cd players, some dvd players and some car stereos” How can they get away with this? Also, a lot of people have those new fangled mp3 players! how is one to get to listen to the music THEY PAID FOR on their own music. Stupid. Rant off ———-
I saw a few shows since my last post.. if anyone cares. Superjoint Ritual with Zeke, Slitheryn last night. Was pretty good. Superjoint’s lead vocalist used to be the vocalist in Pantera, so he’s pretty “famous” in metal circles… and he’s known for just talking a lot, and not really saying anything important.
So, for that fact, it was entertaining. Also, the band plays some pretty good heavy music. Zeke was more of a punk band from Seattle I believe. Good stuff too! And Slitheryn (named for the school in the Harry Potter books) is made up of like, 15 and 16 year olds. A Lot of talent for those youngin’s!
Last Thursday, the book and I went to see Exodus in Milwaukee. They are an 80’s San Fran area thrash band. Some classic stuff came from this band, and they really showed how to do it. Their new “comeback” album is pretty thrashin’, therefore, they played most of that, as well as a lot of their classics. Cool stuff.
Last weekend, the weather was very nice. Walked around the arboretum a little bit, and checked out the Neon and Glass / Art Exhibit type thing on the UW Campus. I LOVE neon stuff, so this was hella cool.
Well, I’m done for now. dammit, I need to post more. I will REALLY try harder for you, my blog viewer. So, leave a comment. say hi, and stuff.
mattymo….. OUT!
I had Tim last weekend. IT was fun, we had some stuff to do on saturday…. like move some old excercise equipment out of the basement and a love seat.. over to a co-worker of Sandi’s. Nice to have a big chunk of space open down here again. Also, we re-arranged the living room to accomodate a piano! My mom decided she did not want her piano anymore and said, take it or I’m donating it to someone… so needless to say, my sis can’t turn up the piano, so we made arrangements to get it. And wow, those arrangements are me and Sandi’s b/f. I STILL have a bruise from lifting that thing. ouch… but the living room looks cool, and stuff. That night we all went out to eat. The first time taking Tim out to a restaurant for dinner (that wasn’t like fast food). He was a great lil boy! Sunday was spring forward time. We went bowling with my dad, lisa and maddie. It was fun! Tim is getting better at bowling and hey, bowling is fun!
Monday was mosh pit time once again… always neato. The shows have been generally heavier lately. Less “nu metal” and more thrash, metalcore and death metal lately. It doesn’t hurt that there’s a lot of new stuff out there to choose from. It gets a lot harder to squeeze in stuff in 3 hours.
Tuesday, softball!! 1st Softball practice of the year. It wasn’t too bad, and with the piano and furniture moving over the weekend, I didn’t end up being too sore afterwards. The season starts a week from tuesday.
Wednesday, I got my hair cut, then I went to a movie. Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind It was a great movie. Neat concept and played very well by Jim Carrey and the VERY beautiful Kate Winslet.
I highly recommend it!
Thursday was going to be another softball practice night, but I blew it off for some intense sheepshead playing! Jamie, a co-worker has a regular thursday sheepshead thing with a few friends that rotates, well, when they need someone I get a call, and I was available enough to help out. Didn’t hurt that Jamie needed me to work on his computer a little bit too. But it was fun, I always learn something, and I only lost like three bucks.
Friday was just weird. My friend Cindy from CA was in town for the weekend, so I went to lunch with her and another former co-worker, and a current co-worker. Neato. Then back to work. Rumor had it that everyone was leaving at 2:30p due to Good Friday. Of course my boss only said so when I said I heard a rumor. The problem was, I’m “essential” personell on Fridays from 3-5p, as I work in Master Control. So, yeah, I left right at 5. But before that, I was going through a doorway, turned to look to see if I forgot something, and while opening the door more to turn and look, my big ass foot caught the door and BOOM, my forehead ran smack into the door! OUCH!! So, yeah, that left a red mark and a good sized bump above my left eyebrow.
After work. It was off to Milwaukee with Mike to see the Headbangers Ball Tour. Damageplan, Hatebreed, Drowning Pool and Unearth. I was supposed to be on Unearth’s guest list, and even had a phone number of someone on the tour in case of problems. “Free” concerts is a semi-perk of doing the radio show. I ask the record label to help me out, they get me on the list, or try to… and I get a free show, usually with a guest. This time, Unearth’s label could only get me on the list, no guest. Mike was set to get a ticket with one of the Rave’s “FREE ADMISSION, TWO DRINK MINIMUM” Tickets. Usually these are about 14 - 18 bucks tops, then you get two drink tickets. So, yeah, get to the point Matt…. I’m not on the list, the contact person doesn’t answer, and I’m S.O.L. Mike has only one of those “Free tickets” So while I wait for the return call, he gets his “Free ticket” for TWENTY DOLLARS. We wait outside a bit more. No call back. We found another “Free ticket” and I coughed up the 20 bucks… in what I think may be the first show (other than Dream Theater) that I’ve paid for at the Rave. Blech. If it were in Madison, I would have just gone home. I only go to so many of these shows because I don’t have to pay for them, and, of course, to check them out to see if I should play them more on the air, something to report on over the air, etc., etc., etc. Anyways…. Hatebreed stole the show, they totally owned the crowd. Drowning Pool was eh. Nu-Metal boringness. Damageplan (2 former Pantera members) was great, but they had to follow Hatebreed… which didn’t make their singer happy, as he went “i can’t hear you… it’s friday, i can’t hear you… make some noise” blah blah blah When they ripped into a couple Pantera songs though, the place just went apeshit.
Saturday. I was going to go to a show at the Annex, Atreyu, but eh. After Friday night, I was kind of “showed” out. I went to my mom’s and setup and installed her new 17″ flat panel monitor. It’s very cool. And she has a whole lot more desk space!
And let’s wrap it up with today…
I got some tickets from work for the Brewers game. I got to FINALLY take Sandi and Farrell to something. And they had a great time, and so did I. My employer has the same tickets as last year. front row of the club level on the 1st base side. Sweet seats, as you get waited on n stuff. I was hoping they would open the dome at the end of the game so they could see it, and they did! Very cool. The last foul ball of the game was hit into the front row of the section above us, and they bobbled it and it fell down right into our row, and Sandi/Farrell got the ball! Sweeet!!!!
The NHL Playoffs have begun and it looks to be yet another good set of games going down the line. I ended up in 2nd place in SportingNews fantasy hockey and 2nd from last in Yahoo. Damn that Yahoo! Blech. Maybe next year!
So, yeah, someone post a comment or something, does anyone read me anymore? ![]()
